Sorbic acid (C₆H₈O₂), alternatively named 2,4-hexadienoic acid, 2-propenylacrylic acid or sorbinic acid, is a food additive that suppresses the reproduction of yeasts, molds and other fungi. Beyond food preservation, it is also extensively applied in animal feed, cosmetics, medicines, packaging and rubber additives.

Product Application of Sorbic Acid
Sorbic acid is a broad-spectrum, low-toxicity preservative that is effective against molds and yeasts and has moderate sensitizing potential in leave-on cosmetic formulations. It is typically used at concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.3%, with its preservative effectiveness depending on the pH of the formulation.
In cosmetic applications, sorbic acid can be used as an alternative to glycerin in emulsions, ointments, and various cream formulations. It may be obtained naturally from the berries of mountain ash and rowan trees or produced through synthetic processes.
Although widely used as a preservative, sorbic acid may cause irritation in some individuals.
