Sodium metasilicate pentahydrate (Na₂SiO₃·5H₂O), also called instant water glass, is a non-toxic, odorless inorganic white powder or crystalline granule. It dissolves readily in water but not alcohol or acid, absorbs moisture and deliquesces in air, with alkaline aqueous solutions. This chemical boasts powerful cleaning, emulsifying, dispersing and wetting effects plus pH buffering performance. It neutralizes acidic grime, breaks down grease, disperses inorganic residues and protects metals against corrosion. As the most popular type of sodium metasilicate, it inherits typical sodium silicate properties and binds calcium and magnesium ions, with magnesium binding capacity exceeding 260mg MgCO₃ per gram under standard test conditions.
