Calcium chloride (CaCl₂) is a colorless, hygroscopic, and deliquescent solid that exhibits excellent solubility in water and is also soluble in ethanol. It is commonly manufactured through the reaction of calcium carbonate with hydrochloric acid or by reacting calcium hydroxide with ammonium chloride. Due to its versatile properties, calcium chloride is widely used in various fields, including medical applications, antifreeze solutions, and as a coagulation agent.

From a chemical compatibility perspective, calcium chloride aqueous solutions are mildly alkaline. In the presence of moisture, calcium chloride can react with zinc to generate highly flammable hydrogen gas. Its dissolution in water releases a significant amount of heat due to its highly exothermic nature. Calcium chloride should be handled carefully as it is incompatible with certain substances, including bromine trifluoride, 2-furan, and percarboxylic acids. Additionally, prolonged exposure to moisture may cause corrosion of some metals and construction materials.
