Product Description of Ammonium Sulfate CAS#7783-20-2

Ammonium sulfate is one of the earliest nitrogen fertilizers developed and remains widely used worldwide. It is recognized as a conventional nitrogen fertilizer with a nitrogen content typically ranging from 20% to 30%. As a salt formed by the reaction of a strong acid and a weak base, it produces a mildly acidic aqueous solution. In addition to supplying nitrogen, ammonium sulfate also functions as an acidic fertilizer. However, prolonged and excessive application may contribute to soil acidification and compaction, making proper soil management essential.

Ammonium sulfate is not suitable for the production of organic fertilizers and should not be applied together with alkaline fertilizers, as the resulting double hydrolysis reaction can reduce its fertilizing efficiency. During the 1960s, it served as the dominant nitrogen fertilizer and was also an important source of sulfur for crop production. Although it was originally manufactured through the neutralization of ammonia with sulfuric acid, by-product ammonium sulfate has gradually become the primary source of commercial production.

At present, the majority of ammonium sulfate is recovered as a by-product from industrial processes including coking, caprolactam production, sulfuric acid tail-gas desulfurization, power plant flue gas desulfurization, acrylonitrile manufacturing, methyl methacrylate production, and zinc oxide processing.
